Year R

Year R at Holbrook Primary School

Throughout the year we learn about key celebrations and seasonal changes in the world around us.  Most learning follows the children’s interests so you will notice changes to our classroom environment regularly!

Reception children learn best when they are active and engaged so most opportunities to learn are play based.  These happen during ‘COOL’ time (continuing our own learning).  We support the children and extend their learning through modelling and questioning.  Our observations are uploaded to Tapestry for you to enjoy looking at, at home.  Please comment on them and upload your own observations to show us what makes you proud of your child.  We share these with the whole class every Monday using the Interactive Whiteboard.

We teach Maths, English and Phonics through structured teaching and play based activities.  Phonics is taught daily and it would be great if children practiced at home too.

Your child will bring home books to read with you at home.  We aim to hear children read individually once a week.  If you would like your child’s book changed more regularly please see a member of the Year R team.

Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays.

We visit the school library every Wednesday.

Helping At Home:

Once your child has settled into the school routine there are a number of things you can do to help at home:

  • Practice writing name using printed letters (please ask if you are unsure)
  • Recognise own name.
  • Counting activities – get your child to help count out items (up to 20).
  • Play board games together.
  • Practice the letter sounds.

If you have any questions please pop in and see any of the staff who will be happy to help.
